Sewing 101: 10 Essential Tips for Reading and Using Sewing Patterns

01. Choose a sewing pattern suited to your skill level

When you’re just starting, it’s important to choose patterns that match your skill level.

Many pattern companies label their sewing patterns as beginner, intermediate, or advanced. As a beginner, opt for patterns labelled as “easy” or “beginner-friendly.” These patterns usually have fewer pieces and simpler construction techniques, making them easier to follow.

In my opinion, it’s less stressful to start off simple and work your way up to more complicated projects!

Alternatively, if you are up for a challenge, know you won’t feel defeated by advanced sewing patterns and terminology and won’t want to toss your sewing machine out the window when you’re stuck, feel free to ignore this step! 😅

02. Understand sewing pattern terminology & symbols

Sewing patterns come with a variety of symbols and terminology that you need to understand. Start demystifying these pattern symbols and terminology!

Familiarise yourself with the basics that you’ll come across time and time again – from grainlines and notches to darts and zippers. This will ensure you set a solid foundation for how to use your sewing patterns, both now and in the future.

Most pattern instructions include a key or legend to help you decode what each of these markings mean. Check them before starting!

03. Read the sewing instructions carefully

If you’re anything like me, you like to have an overview of what’s up ahead before you start preparing something, whether it be a new recipe for Sunday dinner or a new garment to sew.

Before you even start cutting your fabric, read through the entire pattern instruction sheet!

This will give you a clear idea of the steps involved, techniques and tools required, and help you understand the overall construction process so you can start imagining how you will make this sewing project come to life.

Pay attention to any special tips provided in the instructions, as these can be useful, or even crucial, for a successful outcome.

04. Take accurate measurements

Every body is unique and so should be every project!

Accurate measurements are crucial for a successful outcome to any sewing project. And they’re even more critical for a good fit when it comes to creating clothing!

Don’t just rely on “I usually buy my clothes in size X when I go shopping”.

Use a flexible tape measure to take your measurements, and compare them to the pattern’s size chart. Most sewing patterns provide measurements for bust, waist, hips, and sometimes other areas. Choose the size that closest matches your measurements, and consider making a test garment if you’re unsure about the fit.

05. Use the correct fabric

All fabrics are the same, right? WRONG! (Even if it is in your dream colour and on sale! 😉) So, choosing the right fabric to use your sewing pattern is essential.

Each pattern suggests specific types of fabric that will work best for the design (eg stretch jersey or linen).

Pay attention to these recommendations, as using an inappropriate fabric can result in a garment that doesn’t fit or hang properly. When in doubt, ask for advice at your local fabric store or chat in a reliable online sewing group.

06. Pre-wash & prepare fabric correctly

Before you slice and dice your fabulous fabric, first get it ready to help ensure a great look to your finished project!

Pre-washing your fabric is a step you shouldn’t skip. Many fabrics shrink when washed, and it’s best to get this shrinkage out of the way before you cut your pattern pieces. Pre-washing also removes any chemicals or finishes that might be on the fabric, making it easier to work with.

Also iron your fabric before laying it out for cutting. It will help ensure your fabric pieces are measured and cut accurately.

And remember (dear iron-haters, like myself 😅): Pressing isn’t just about the start and finish of a sewing project. It’s an integral step throughout the sewing process.

07. Prepare the paper sewing pattern pieces

Here’s a handy trick for sewing patterns which most people don’t even consider doing: Instead of cutting out the original pattern pieces, trace them onto pattern paper or tracing paper. (Sandwich or baking paper are affordable options. 😉)

This allows you to preserve the original pattern for future use, especially if you need to make adjustments or try different sizes. Use a ruler and a pencil to trace the lines accurately.

When you do need to cut the pattern, carefully cut along the cutting lines of your size, making sure not to accidentally cut through important markings.

And of course, always use paper scissors, not your precious fabric scissors. Fabric scissors can become dull when used on paper.

08. Pay close attention when cutting the fabric pieces

When you’re ready to cut your fabric, take your time to pin the pattern pieces accurately. Lay your fabric flat and smooth out any wrinkles (although your already ironed the fabric, right?!? 😉).

Lay the pattern pieces in place, making sure the marked grainlines are aligned with the fabric’s grain. Grainlines on pattern pieces should be aligned parallel to the selvage edge of the fabric. This ensures that the garment hangs correctly when worn. Use a ruler to measure and ensure the grainline is straight before pinning and cutting.

To keep the pattern pieces in place while cutting, you can use pattern weights or pins. Weights are particularly useful for delicate fabrics that might be damaged by pins. Place the weights or pins along the edges of the pattern pieces to prevent them from shifting.

Some patterns do not include seam allowances. Read the pattern instructions thoroughly to see if seam allowances are included. If not, you’ll need to add them yourself around the relevant edges of the pattern pieces.

Then, use sharp fabric scissors to cut out the pieces, following the cutting lines carefully.

09. Transfer any relevant markings onto the fabric

Before removing the papers from your fabric pieces, transfer any markings from the pattern pieces onto your fabric.

These markings can include notches, darts, buttonholes, and other important details. Use tailor’s chalk, washable fabric markers, or tracing paper to make these marks.

Accurate markings are essential for matching pieces together and sewing details (like zippers or hems) correctly and not relying on confusion and guesswork later. 💪

10. Follow the sewing instructions and create your project!

Finally, before you even insert the sewing machine needle into your fabric, be sure that you are familiar with your sewing machine and its settings.

If necessary, grab some leftover scraps of the fabric you’re about to use and practice some basic sewing techniques. These might include straight stitching, zigzag stitching, and sewing curves. Practicing these skills will help you feel more confident and avoid mistakes during your project.

Sewing is a skill that takes time to develop. Don’t rush through your projects; take your time to ensure each step is done correctly and completely before moving onto the next one.

Always keep the pattern instructions nearby to follow as you sew. If you make a mistake, don’t get discouraged. Use it as a learning opportunity and try again. The more you sew, the more proficient you’ll become.
