Guide to the Greatest Gifts Book Lovers will Adore!

I love my kids. I love how they constantly have an abundance of creative ideas! And I love how they are always asking about Everything’s Famtastic and offering me ideas of what I could write about here. This post is the result of exactly this type of enthusiasm and brain-storming. Well, sort of…  in a roundabout way… 😉

All 3 of my kids are MASSIVE bookworms. My 2 daughters have been so for a loooong time. And my son, who just started school this year and always had an affinity for books, can now proudly read for himself. Suffice to say, that this bilingual household is overflowing with German and English children’s books!

A while back my eldest daughter wrote a (now very popular!) post about super books series for girls aged 9-12. And then my younger daughter published her list of must-read book series for girls 6 – 9 years. So naturally, they keep prodding me to write even more blog posts here about kids’ books.

But this article isn’t about books per se, rather about creative gifts for the book lover in your life. These gift ideas are perfect for bookworms of any age, especially if you are trying to avoid adding to the already sagging bookshelf!

So, what present do you give a book lover, if not books?!? Well, in this list we have thought of all the things an avid reader needs to stay comfortable, undisturbed and busy in their reading “happy place”! There’s also printables to keep an eye out for.

Be careful though! These gift ideas are SO GOOD that your bookworm may get so settled, you might never see them again! Take a look for yourself…

If you’re looking for some fresh inspiration of gifts to buy for book fans the list below you will keep you covered for any occasion, whether it’s Christmas, a birthday, Valentine’s Day or just because!

Without further ado, here is the grand list of gifts for book lovers, as compiled by my daughter (with a little help from me!). “Because I love reading, I chose some things I would like to get or that I have already, so the reading gets better, more fun and comfier. I bet you will LOVE these ideas too!”

Keep an eye out for her other tips and comments too 😉.

What Gifts to Buy for a Book Lover

Gift Idea #1: Mug

Who doesn’t enjoy having a drink nearby when engrossed in a good book? And what better than a great new mug to fill with a favourite warming drink? Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, you name it! And of course, mugs come in all sizes, shapes and colours, as well as decorated with witty quotes and sayings. With this gift suggestion you have more than enough options!

“If you`re into tea and other hot drinks get a fancy mug! I once saw one that can change its colour if the drink in it is hot! Cool!”

Gift Idea #2: Reading Light

There are all sorts of lights available on the market. Desk lights. Table lights. Floor lamps. Torches. Headlamps. Those cute little reading lights that click onto books… Again, the choices seem almost endless, you’re guaranteed to find one that suits!

“If you like reading at night, you definitely need a light.”

I happen to know a couple of young people in my household who very much like reading at night, often far longer than they should do *ahem*. 😉

Gift Idea #3: Beanbag

No, they didn’t disappear with the ‘70s. Beanbags are still cool, still comfortable and still fun! They come in a huge range colours and in both kids’ sizes and adults’ sizes. Instead of lying in bed reading all the time (again *ahem* looking at you 3, my dear children!! Anyone else’s kids too?!?) or reclining on the sofa, the book lover can flop down into a beanbag and never get sick of it.

“A beanbag is perfect for reading! It’s always comfortable!”

Gift Idea #4: Cozy Gifts

Think fluffy, warm, soft, snuggly… Blankets, rugs, floor rugs (for those book lovers who enjoy reading on the floor!), cushions, fluffy socks, slippers… You get the idea, right?!? Give the gift of comfort!

“I like fluffiness! Who doesn`t?!?”

Gift Idea #5: Neck Support Pillow

A specialised pillow is a great gift idea for those addicted to reading. In Germany they are often referred to as Leseknochen (reading bone) and are actually also an easy DIY sewing project. Such pillows can be used not only for head and neck support, but also as a hands-free resting stand for a book or tablet. Alternatively, it can just be good for cuddling with. Nifty, hey??!

“Another good reading accessory is a Leseknochen. You can put it under your neck or lean against it! I use mine every day! Nice!”

P.S. I’ve even written a new post with links to all you need to know about making one of your own reading pillows! I’ve also created a DIY Sewing Kit containing everything you need to sew one of these original pillows, complete with instructions, fabric and filling! Take a look here.

Gift Idea #6: Memberships and Subscriptions

For lovers of reading who don’t want to collect another pile of books, giving the gift of a membership or subscription is a great alternative. A library membership is an excellent starting place (Some charge fees, others are free. Just check with your own local library). Subscriptions for magazines, audio books (eg Amazon Audible) and eBooks (eg on Amazon Kindle; however, there are stacks of other providers too).

“If you like getting new reading stuff, you really should try one of these! Me and my brother and sister have library memberships. Quite useful…”

Gift Idea #7: eReader

There are many electronic devices available on the market to read and enjoy eBooks on. Amazon’s Kindle is one of the most well know, but certainly not the only option. Most tablets also allow you to download a special app for reading eBooks

I know I said this book lovers’ gift list wasn’t about giving books… but eBooks are a little different to that stack of paperbacks on the shelf 😉.

“Kindles are cool! You can buy books on it and then you read them without dragging thousands of books with you!”

*ahem* I can think of someone I know who routinely drags thousands of books around with them anyway, LOL.

Gift Idea #8: Headphones or Earphones

Not everyone else enjoys listening in to the same audio books of bookworms. Audio books are a great alternative to stay mobile while also enjoying a good book. They’re also fun for younger children who loves stories but can’t yet read for themselves (and you have already read them 10 picture books today… 😉). So, how can the book lover enjoy that audio book without disturbing the peace? With a pair of funky new earphones!

“If you`re more into audio books you should definitely get some nice headphones!”

Gift Idea #9: Gift Voucher

Yes, we mean a gift voucher for a book store. Yes, to buy more books, LOL.

“Let the kids (or parents or grandparents or cousins or friends or…) choose a book! I like to choose my own books to buy.”

You could always buy a gift voucher for something completely non-book related if you feel that your book fan needs distracting from those pages… 😉 Everyone loves a gift voucher so they can go shopping and choose out something they’ll cherish.

Gift Idea #10: Printable Do Not Disturb Sign

Most book lovers do not like being interrupted when they are in the middle of a good read, right? What better than to give them a sign to say so?

We have created the perfect printable Do Not Disturb sign, free for you to download! Grab yours here right now!

“If you`re busy reading hang out that door sign. Hopefully it works …” 😆

Gift Idea #11: Book

Last but not least, there is no avoiding it. What do the most avid bookworms wish for most? Books of course! The perfect gift idea for a book lover is… another book.

“Of course a book fan loves books! Personally, they are my no. 1!”
