Wait! What?!? Are we in February already? Whoa! I have been working countless hours behind the scenes here on Everything’s Famtastic, studying and planning and preparing great content to serve you better. And I was starting to think that February might have been a little sewing-biased. And that would have been OK. But no! Not anymore!
My younger daughter decided that enough was enough. She was waiting no longer to have her turn in the spotlight like her bigger sister before her. So for this week, sewing chit chat is off the table, and children’s book reviews are the thing everyone is talking about.
If you remember, a few weeks back my eldest daughter (Miss 11) wanted to create a post reviewing her personally chosen and recommended book series for girls aged 9 to 12 years old. I was responsible for the general blurb, she wrote the review entirely independently. I’ve gotta say, I was REALLY proud of her and I’ve received a lot of positive feedback for her reviews 😊. *pat on the back Miss 11*
Not only our eldest daughter, but also our younger daughter and son are all complete and utter bookworms. Hand them a half-interesting book and it may well be finished within hours. Naturally Miss 8 (and Master 6, to be honest) also want to share their opinions of the best books to read. And by share, I mean, write a review here on this very blog. Who said the fam in FAMtastic didn’t stand for family?!?
So, without further ado, come and take a look at Miss 8’s recommended, best book series for 6 to 9 year old girls! I’m really excited that she wants to get on board with my blog! Read on…

There’s a nice mix of fiction and non-fiction books to be discovered here. My kids LOVE a good list of facts! As in my post of book reviews for 9 to 12 year old girls , I have not read all of these books personally (and definitely far fewer pony books than my daughter would wish me too 😉) but they are suitable for girls in the 6 to 9 years age range. As always, parental discretion is an individual responsibility 😉.
Tip! Boys love reading too! If you have a little reader around this same age, take a look at my list of super book series for boys 6 to 9. They’re going to love them!
Brilliant Book Series for 6 to 9 Year Old Girls
“Why?” & “Why Not?” by National Geographic
As a parent, I love National Geographic books! They are beautifully presented, full of great information and stunning photos. These 2 books are perfect for inquiring minds: each book contains over 1000 questions and answers to, well, just about anything! Want to know why earth doesn’t float away into space? It’s in these books. Want to know why we won’t be living on Uranus any time soon? Look in the books! Pretty much any question your kids could ask about our bodies, the animal kingdom, our planet, pop culture or the universe will be answered in these fantastically fascinating books!
Miss 8 says: “There are lots and lots of questions with answers. I like these books because they are very interesting and you will learn a lot about your body and the sky and the galaxy and animals and a lot more. There are funny questions too in the “Silly Question, Serious Answer” sections. They have beautiful pictures. Not every book is like these ones. I like them because you will be smarter and smarter after reading every page.”
“Dork Diaries” by Rachel Renee Russell
These hilarious, creatively illustrated books will keep any young girl giggling and entertained for hours. The main character Nikki (aka Queen of the Dorks!) hopes to become popular at her new school, which is of course more easily said than done. Across this (currently) 14-book series Nikki pours her heart out into her diary, including dramas with best friends, boys, family and of course the popular girls at school.
Miss 8 says: “It is a funny series that will make you laugh! You will absolutely love it because the main character Nikki has not so nice a life but she tries to make the best out of it. She has 2 friends that are always for her there. And she has a little sister who does a lot of crazy things. She also has an arch-enemy who is very nasty and does things that make her cry and everyone at school only talks about Mackenzie and fashion, but it always is not so bad. She also has a crush on cool, sweet Brandon. There are a lot of funny pictures in these books. It’s not really important to read this series in order although sometimes they might mention something that had happened in the last book.”
“The 13-Storey Treehouse” by Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton
This rollicking series follows the (mis-) adventures of best friends Andy and Terry. They live in a self-built treehouse, which starts off having 13 storeys and quickly progresses with an additional 13 storeys in every new book. (Right now the Treehouse has 117 storeys 😉). Flying cats? Sure. A money / honey machine? Of course! Utterly ridiculous and hysterically- written, these books will have your kids cackling to themselves and re-enacting their favourite scenes in no time. If you are after a serious, educational book. Then this is not for you. If you are looking for nonsense and belly-aching fun, then this is the series you’re after!
Miss 8 says: “A funny series with nice pictures. If you read the first page you can’t stop. The two main characters do and say silly things and think they are geniuses and are not so smart as they think. They build strange and hilarious new levels in their treehouse. Sometimes they talk to you [the reader]. You will laugh out loud when you read the silly adventures of Andy and Terry. Terry is the funniest. Like the time he washed his underpants in the shark tank in their treehouse. You will find it even funnier that you could have thought!”
“Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls” by Elena Favilli & Francesca Cavallo
There are currently 2 books in this brilliantly inspiring series, designed to make girls dream big. No more fairy tales of princes rescuing princesses! Each of these books contains the stories of 100 amazing women, from Catherine the Great to Marie Curie to Michelle Obama, every one of whom followed their heart and dreams to do great things- often in the face of doubt and opposition from others. Young girls can discover across continents and time all the amazing things women have done before them and be inspired to strive for their own goals too.
Miss 8 says: “This series is full of interesting stories that women and girls have done. Girls that think they are not very strong can see how strong women are and they can feel better cos they know women are not helpless and they will fight more for their rights and their future. There are a lot of nice pictures drawn by different people and important things that the women have said. Two of my favourites were Amelia Earhart who attempted to fly around the world and the 13 year old Australian girl who sailed around the world. I like them because they did something that no one had done before. On the last page you can even fill out your own story and draw your own picture.”
“My Secret Unicorn” by Linda Chapman
By day, Twilight looks like any other ordinary pony. But with the right magic words from Lauren, he transforms into a beautiful unicorn. And that’s where their biggest adventures together begin! Lauren and Twilight learn how to use magic to help out friends in trouble, even 4-legged ones! With over a dozen books in this series, pony and unicorn fans will have hours and hours or reading pleasure with these beautiful, fantasy stories.
Miss 8 says: “They are magical stories with a lot of adventures. At night the girl Lauren changes her grey pony Twilight into a unicorn using a magic spell. But it’s a secret that Twilight is a unicorn. She hasn’t even told her 2 best friends and her family that Twilight is a unicorn. When Twilight is a unicorn he can speak to Lauren and fly and also speak with all animals and make Lauren not feel so sleepy in the mornings and a lot more! I think you will like them because they are magical and sometimes suspenseful but not so scary.”
“Alice Miranda” by Jacqueline Harvey
In the opening story of this 18-book series, plucky Alice Miranda has to find her place in her new boarding school where things just don’t seem quite right. Alice is determined to find out why, all while dealing with some difficult girls along the way. Part-detective, part ordinary schoolgirl, Alice continues to come across suspicious people and mysterious goings-on as these books take her across the continents on new adventures. As they say “If anyone can, Alice Miranda can!”.
Miss 8 says: “Alice Miranda is a very nice girl even people are not so nice she is friendly to. She helps other people who are not happy because of their own problems. She is a school kid who is very interested in everything that happens around her. Alice is 7 ¼. The headmistress Mrs Grimm hasn’t been seen by the students in 10 years and Alice is very interested in talking with her. Mrs Grimm is not very nice. Alice wants to talk about problems with her other teachers but Mrs Grimm doesn’t like it so much that Alice always comes to her. The stories are always interesting!”
“Pippi Longstocking” by Astrid Lindgren
Who hasn’t heard of Pippi Longstocking? The first Pippi book was published in 1945 and her marvellous adventures haven’t stopped since! Pippi lives alone- with no parents, imagine!- in a house with her horse and monkey Mr Nilsson. Along with the 2 children next door, the kind-hearted, mischievous Pippi enjoys one escapade after another! There are several books in this classic series to keep Pippi fans happy and enthralled for a long time.
Miss 8 says: “This book is about a girl that is very young and lives in a house without parents but with a monkey and a horse. She’s funny because she thinks her mother is an angel and that her father is a King in the South Sea. She has friends who are very nice. One time she is chased by 2 police and they tried to bring her to an orphanage but she is so strong that they couldn’t catch her. She is a little bit crazy and a bit silly and does not go to school. She has a lot of adventures. I like her crazy ideas!”
Bonus Recommendations for Young Reading Fans
As I said already, my kids LOVE LOVE LOVE books and one blog post would never be enough to cover them all. There’s a big wide world out there full of brilliant books to be discovered! I swear our house sometimes feels like this 👇
… but really it’s not that bad. I will NOT complain that my children enjoy reading!
Plus, since we are a German-Australian, bilingual household, there are some fantastic books in German, which my kids cackle at constantly and clear out from the library every time… But although you can also find them in Polish, French, Spanish, or Turkish, they just are not available in English. Boohoo! 😢
So, here are is handy list of further book recommendations for girls 6 to 9 that are either in German (here’s to you, German speakers!!), or that we haven’t yet gotten around to reading but that friends and family have declared that we “simply must!!”.
- “Puppy Diary” by Yvette Poshoglian
- “Juliet, Nearly a Vet” by Rebecca Johnson
- “Real Pigeons” by Andrew McDonald
- “Ella and Olivia” by Yvette Poshoglian
- “Clementine Rose” by Jacqueline Harvey
- “The Naughtiest Girl” by Enid Blyton (and pretty much anything by Enid Blyton! Though some really are for slightly older readers…)
- “EJ Spy School” by Susannah McFarlane
- “Mein Lotta Leben” by Alice Pantermüller (in German)
- “Penny Pepper” by Ulrike Rylance (in German)
- “Die Schule der magischen Tiere” by Margit Auer (in German)
Once again, big thanks to the Mamas Brains Trust for their additions to the “Bonus Recommendations” list and a big round of applause to Miss 8, for typing out her reviews on the computer by herself! (With a couple of spelling corrections, but we can agree to overlook that, right?!?).
I hope that you have discovered some new and exciting titles that will make your daughter’s next visit to the library or book store all the more enticing!
Did we miss out on any brilliant book series for young girls? What series would you suggest for girls aged 6 to 9? Share with us below!
My brothers loved the dork diaries when they were younger!
Brilliant! They are still bit hits here 🙂
Thanks so much for these recommendations. Perfect for my grandchildren!
Great! I hope they enjoy them!
Wow, thanks for the tips! I am always on the lookout for books for my 10 yr old girl. It’s great to read your daughter’s perspective!
I’m glad you enjoyed this list. And you’ll definitely want to check out this one too >>> https://everythingsfamtastic.com/best-book-series-for-9-to-12-year-old-girls/
My daughters are 8 and 4 and we love reading together. My 8 year old enjoys reading by herself, but she’s mostly been reading books that her older brothers have already read and recommend to her. So this list will come in handy in helping her to branch out to something new. I love that your daughter gives her own reviews too – very helpful.
My children always want to give me a hand to share with other kids (via their Mamas, of course) their ideas and tips! I also have a page (written by my eldest daughter) with book recommendations for slightly older girls, since your daughter is so into reading 😉 https://everythingsfamtastic.com/best-book-series-for-9-to-12-year-old-girls/
My daughter isn’t old enough to read these quite yet! But I can’t wait til we can read together. I love reading her books this. The Alice Miranda book seems like a good one to read over time. Nice list. Thanks
I am sure as time goes by, your girl will grow to love books! Happy reading 🙂
Good collection! I will keep it saved until my boy is big enough to start reading
I’ll be getting my little guy to put together a recommendations list soon. Keep your eye out for that one too 😉
The Dork Diaries are very popular with the younger students in my school. They just can’t get enough of them.
I can tell when my younger daughter is reading one of those books by the cackling coming from her room!
YES! I love that there are so many great series of books just for girls. The books sure have changed since I was this age.
There are SO many books out there to choose from, and I love how it’s not ONLY ponies and princesses 😉
You provided some great pickings. I have a 9 year old goddaughter and I will definitely gift her one of these books.
I am sure your goddaughter will appreciate whichever one you choose!!
Fantastic ideas!
Thanks, hope you found some useful ideas in there!
So cute how your children are involved in your blog and engaging intheir own writing topics as well. This is very encouraging and would be a nice touch for a lot of parents to inpliment into their children’s day to day activities. I enjoyed this post 🙂
Thanks! All 3 kids love reading All.The.Time. and my 2 eldest have also started writing their own stories too! So yes, begging Mama to help with her blog is another aspect of all this 😉
