Sensational Book Series for Boys Aged 6 to 9 Years

This week’s post is going to be all about books. The fun kind. For boys. It’s a change of pace from the last few posts I have written here. And afterall, the season of gift-giving is coming. Maybe you’ll find some inspiring gift ideas. 😉

By the way, I have some great gift ideas for bookworms which might help you out, if your kids are anything like mine and your book collection has grown to epic proportions!

But for now, let’s get back to the world of books.

Both of my daughters LOVE books and were so determined to share their addiction love of reading with others, that they begged me to let them write a list of book series they highly recommend. You can read those lists here: book series for girls 6 to 9 and book series for girls 9 to 12.

But God forbid my son be left out of the action. He too wanted to share his love of reading with other kids (Hello, Bookworm #3 of the family!) and voila! Here we are.

If you are ready to dive into the world of unbeatable book series for boys, then you’ll want to keep reading!

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links, meaning that I get a small commission if you decide to make a purchase through my links, at no extra cost to you.

My 3 children are PROLIFIC readers and there is no way I can read every book that they choose to read and tell me about. I have however tried to ensure that the books my son wanted to share are appropriate for children within the 6- to 9-year-old age group. Obviously, every child has different reading interests and abilities, so I can’t guarantee that all these books are the right fit for your little guy. And I think it goes without saying, but I’m going to say in anyway: you will be the best person to judge the appropriateness of a book series for your own child.

Last but not least: a lot of these books are great for boys AND girls. They are included in this book series list for boys simply because it was my son who loved them and wanted to tell you about them!

Happy reading!

Must Read Book Series for Boys Aged 6 to 9

My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish by Mo O’Hara
What’s My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish about?

Tom has a big brother. Tom’s big brother wants to be an Evil Scientist. Combine one Evil Scientist big brother and one pet goldfish Frankie and you get a pretty outlandish experiment involving chemicals and batteries. But after this experiment Frankie is not quite the same. And he’s out for revenge and more chaos in this hilariously illustrated series!

Mister 7 says: I like the Zombie Goldfish because he is cool. I like the story because it is very funny. I have only read the first book but I can’t wait to read the others. I find it hilarious because he’s a goldfish. How can a goldfish be a zombie?!? Frankie is dead and after he is electro-shocked back to life, he wants revenge on the person who killed him. Tom’s brother is really nasty. The goldfish once jumped on a skateboard and aimed it at the brother’s head. That was funny!

Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke
What’s Dragon Rider about?

The Dragon Rider series (now up to part 3) is an adventurous read involving the dragon Firedrake, a pixie-like character called Sorrel and a human named Ben. After Firedrake discovers that humans intend to flood the valley where dragons have been living, the 3 set off to find the Rim of Heaven mountain range and a new home.

Mister 7 says: Ben is the new dragon rider. Ben and his dragon Firedrake have lots of adventures with their kobold friend Sorrel. They try to find the Rim of Heaven because their old home is being threatened. I like Dragon Rider because it’s exciting and thrilling, like the time when they were fighting Nettlebrand the Golden. And I like Ben because he is brave. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

The 13-Storey Treehouse by Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton
What’s The 13 Storey Treehouse about?

The 13 storeys of this treehouse have expanded 13 floors at a time for a while now and the book The 143-Storey Treehouse is number 11 in the series. The 2 main characters are best friends named (funnily enough) Terry and Andy who live together in a treehouse full of craziness and outlandish inventions. These books are equally loved by girls too (take a look at what my then-Miss 8 and then-Miss 11 had to say about them). Daft and unexpected, funny drawings and laugh out loud entertainment is what you’ll get with this book series!

Mister 7 says: Terry and Andy are friends who live together in the treehouse and that’s where they have to write their books to give to Mr Bignose. I like the Treehouse books because they’re funny. I like Terry because he’s silly and funny and creative like the time he invented a toothpaste that was 99% candy. In the treehouse there are a lot of totally crazy levels like the man-eating shark tank level and the pyjama party room and the giant fighting robot arena.

The Adventures of Asterix by Rene Goscinny
What is the Asterix series about?

With 39 volumes published since 1961, the Asterix comic book series keeps on growing. The series centres on the small but cunning Asterix, his best friend Obelix and their village of fellow Gauls as they continue their resistance against Roman rule in the year 50BC. The Romans in charge of winning over the village have it tough, as the Gauls possess a magic, strength-giving potion and quite enjoy their ongoing scuffles with the Roman occupiers. Asterix is cheeky, brave and has enough adventures to last centuries!

Mister 7 says: Asterix books are always really fun. My favourite character is Obelix. He is really big, has an enormous appetite and is über strong. His job is a Menhir deliveryman. Asterix und Obelix are always launching themselves into a new adventure, which is totally funny. There’s almost always Romans in the stories, who try to overthrow the village where Asterix and Obelix live. The druid makes a magic drink which makes people super strong. Obelix fell into the pot of magic drink when he was a baby which makes him super strong forever. The Romans have no chance!

National Geographic Why? And Why Not?
What is National Geographic Why? about?

For kids who love discovering answers to common and not-so-common questions about animals, the human body, our world and the universe, these non-fictions books are a great choice. Presented in question form (Why can’t I dig a hole to the other side of the earth? Why did Vikings wear horned helmets?) accompanied with stunning National Geographic photos these books are a delight to dive into and wow your kids. Fun AND learning? Perfect!

Mister 7 says: People should read these books because there are a lot of amazing facts and you can learn a lot from these books. There are a lot of pictures and there are chapters about topics like space. The best is, it’s fun because you don’t have to sit in a classroom to learn. You can just read it anywhere. Did you know that someone tried to make chickens with dinosaur heads but the eggs never hatched so it didn’t work?!?

Bad Guys by Aaron Blabey
What’s The Bad Guys series about?

Team up the most fearsome, deadly animals and let them run around doing evil good deeds?!? Don’t believe it? Neither do most people who encounter this odd band of funny characters. Which is only one of the challenges these terrifying animals face as they struggle with their innate urges while trying so hard to be good. Hilariously written and illustrated, these books will give plenty of giggles to both kids and grown-ups.

Mister 7 says: Bad Guys books are great because they are very funny. Mr Wolf, Mr Snake, Mr Piranha and Mr Shark try to do good but no one understands them. The others think they are bad guys because they are normally such dangerous animals. These books are like a really thick comic, there are lots of pictures. I like Mr Piranha the most because he says and does funny things and farts a lot (in Book #5).

Hägar the Horrible by Dick Browne
What are Hagar books about?

Hägar the Horrible started out in the 1970s as a newspaper comic strip which has continued to this day. The comics have since been compiled into a large series of books. The main character, Hägar, is a lovable, gruff, overfed Viking who just happens to also be a family man. These comic books will have kids and their parents cackling at the absurdity of Hägar’s daily goings-on with his wife, children and fellow Viking men.

Mister 7 says: These books made me laugh out loud. Hägar drinks too much wine and beer and eats super amounts of cake, cookies, muffins and other tasty stuff. But Helga, Hägar’s wife, tries to diet and eat healthy things. Lucky Eddie is Hägar’s best friend and he is mega dumb. Hägar loves raiding and plundering castles and comes back home with sacks full of jewels and other valuable things. Sometimes there is stuff about crazy sorts of taxes that Hägar should pay, likes taxes on houses and weapons. My favourite characters are Hägar, his dog Snert and Lucky Eddie.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
What is Diary of a Wimpy Kid about?

The wimpy kid in question is Greg Heffley. Greg starts at a new school, planning to be cool and fit in but discovers that school is also filled with bigger, more menacing kids. His cringeworthy attempts at being cool, maintaining friendships and surviving his embarrassing family members are documents in his amusingly written and illustrated diary.

Mister 7 says: In Diary of a Wimpy Kid something always goes wrong and Greg really doesn’t have much luck. He has 2 brothers, one older called Roderick and a younger brother named Manny (who is treated like a prince by their parents). The books are very funny but sometimes I feel sorry for Greg. Some of the things that happen to him could happen to anyone.
