So Easy, You can Sew it in Less Than 30 Minutes!
Well, hello! Great to see you here checking out this latest sewing project. Today I am going to show you the exact steps you need to sew your very own, simple yet stylish, reversible loop scarf!
A while back I published a tutorial on how to sew a patchwork infinity loop scarf which is great fun to put together. But if you’re looking for something even simpler, then this reversible scarf is it!
The cold weather is coming, there’s no stopping it! Which means more sewing, yes, of course! (D’Uh!) But not those pretty dresses and light and breezy blouses of summer. No! We are into creating those warm and cosy clothes that you can look great in AND snuggle into. Mmm, can you just imagine it, a beautiful soft and warm, handmade scarf?
Oh! And did I mention it’s also reversible? 2 looks for the price of one! Aaaaand there are 3 sizes of this scarf for you to choose from, so you’ve got the whole family covered! 😉
But wait! What?
Think you’re too busy to start a new sewing project? Think again! Trust me, this one will take you less than 30 minutes to complete!
Or perhaps you think you’re too much of a beginner and don’t feel confident to try any *tricky* sewing projects? Number 1: everybody else who you see conjuring amazing sewing creations had to start somewhere and so do you! Don’t be scared 😊. Number 2: this is one of the easiest sewing projects you will EVER find! Truly!
Or maybe you’re gonna tell me you don’t want to go out shopping for more fabric when you have so many leftover pieces hiding in those cartons? I hear you! This project is perfect for using up those smaller pieces, especially when you can coordinate them with an item of clothing you already sewed for yourself!
So, are there any more ifs and buts? Or shall we get started sewing?!?
Who Can Sew this Reversible Loop Scarf?
Anyone!! That’s why I love it so much! It is the perfect first project for absolute beginners and well loved by those who have more experience. Psst! It’s also a great project for kids who love to sit at the sewing machine. My 12-year old daughter even sewed one with zero help!
Who is this Loop Scarf For?
Again, anyone!! Women, men, or children. I’ve provided 3 different size measurements to help you outfit the whole gang!
Sewing Project: How to Sew a Reversible Loop Scarf
What You’ll Need
Stretch jersey fabric- you decide whether you will use just one fabric or whether you will mix and match colours and pattern to enjoy the full reversible effect!
Thread to match
Fabric scissors
Tape measure or ruler
Pins
Sewing machine
Step 1:
First up you’ll need to choose the size scarf you wish to sew.
Small> 34 cm x 58 cm (suitable for primary age kids)
Medium> 38 cm x 60 cm (suitable for tweens, teenagers and women)
Large> 40 cm x 62 cm (suitable for men)
Note: Seam allowance of 1 cm is already included!
Step 2:
You need to cut out 2 pieces of fabric in the scarf size you have selected.
Eg if you are sewing for a 6-year old, you’d want to cut out 2 pieces each 34 cm x 58 cm, whereas if you are sewing for an adult male, you’ll want to pieces each 40 cm x 62 cm.
Step 3:
Lay the 2 pieces of fabric right sides together and pin along the 2 long fabric edges.
Using your sewing machine, stitch along those long edges, remembering to use a 1 cm seam allowance.
Tip: A straight stitch will do the trick here, but if you want to be sure that the stitches won’t snap sometime when your child yanks the scarf over their head, a stretchier stitch is an even better choice! Try a triple stretch stitch or a zig zag stitch.
Let me offer you a Bonus Tip here: If you are sewing more than one scarf and want to save time and thread, take a look at this post first to learn how you can easily sew one scarf directly after the last one.
Step 4:
Leave the pieces with the right sides together but slide your arm inside this “tube” all the way until your hand is poking out the other end.
Grasp the open ends of the short sides of the fabric and pull them back up inside the “tube” until both ends meet, right sides together.
Pin around the rim of these edges, remembering to mark a 5cm gap!
Using a 1 cm seam allowance, stitch around the pinned edges. But NOT sewing that 5 cm gap closed! You’ll need it in a moment!
Step 5:
Pull the gap open, using your fingertips reach through the opening and gently pull the fabric out until you have pulled the entire fabric right sides out.
All you need to do is sew that opening closed, either by hand or with your machine.
And you’re done! You have just created your own, reversible loop scarf! Yay!
So, what do you need to do now? Well, apart from sew more scarves?!?
