Simple & Clever Tips to Help You Stitch a Straight Line
Sewing Straight Tip 01: Get to know your sewing machine settings
Before diving into sewing, take some time to familiarise yourself with your sewing machine. Read the manual. Discover the different settings and features and what they are for. Practice threading the machine correctly. Learn how to adjust thread tension. Play around with stitch length.
Grab some fabric scraps and spend time with your machine. Make slight adjustments to the machine settings to discover how the settings can alter the appearance of your stitches and which ones work best for which fabric.
Tip: for most sewing projects, a stitch length of 3-4 is ideal. 😉
Understanding how your machine works will give you better control over your stitches, helping you sew straighter lines effortlessly. 🤩
Sewing Straight Tip 02: Printable sewing practice worksheets
You’ve probably heard the term “muscle memory” before. But almost exclusively when talking about elite athletes and their ability. Well, muscle memory can also make your sewing run smoothly when you can automate some of your hand movements when controlling the movement of the fabric and the direction of your stitching. The trick is in the repetition! 💪
One effective way to improve your sewing skills is by using printable sewing practice sheets. These sheets feature pre-drawn lines and shapes for you to follow with your sewing machine and are a revolutionary way to get hands-on without the fear of ruining an actual fabric project. Use the various straight and curved lines to serve as a guided path for the sewing machine needle.
Tip: I’ve got a bundle of sewing practice sheets you can use to improve your straight line stitching. And you can print them off as many times as you need! 😉
Sewing Straight Tip 03: Use a straight line guide
Think of a guide as like using a ruler to draw a straight line. Rather than imagining a line to follow, if you create a straight line on your sewing machine for you to align the edges of your fabric to, maintaining straight stitching becomes much simpler!
There are many ways for you to make use of a physical guide on your machine. No matter which guide you choose, you must pay attention to the seam allowance required for each sewing project so that it is set in the correct place. ☝️
You could purchase a magnetic seam guide, which will attach to your sewing machine’s needle plate. Or you could buy a washable fabric marker and pre-draw the seam lines you need to follow on your fabrics. Alternatively, get creative with what you already have at home: masking tape, a rubber band or use a pencil to draw your own guide. I even once saw online someone using a row of lego blocks… 😅. Find what works best for you!
