With Easter just around the corner and a lot of people having some unexpected time on their hands at the moment, what better way to cheer up your mood and your living space than with a couple of super sewing projects?!?

This week I was lucky enough to be invited to create an easy, (child-friendly) sewing project as a guest post on the Skelly Hodgepodge blog. You can check out my “Easiest Easter Bunny Sewing Project” HERE. I bet you and your kids will have as much fun sewing these as we did! You know what happens when you start off with just a pair of bunnies, don’t you? Pretty soon there are more popping up everywhere 😉. Kind of like the felt bunnies around our place!

The project that I will be sharing with you in this post though, is something I promised a couple of weeks back: an Egg Basket with space for 5 eggs!

Did you see my tutorial How to Sew an Egg Warmer Basket already? That version had space for 4 boiled eggs to snuggle in all nicely together. This updated version has place for 5 eggs!! Which comes in handy for those of us with larger households. 😉

Don’t just think of this as an Egg Warmer. It’s also the perfect sewing project for Easter. You can hide some coloured eggs inside and use it as a simple table centrepiece. Or for the chocolate fans fill it with Easter Eggs and you’ve got yourself a sweet Easter gift! Mmm, chocolate…

All my detailed instructions and photos are ready to guide you through this easy sewing project. Read on to find out how!

What You’ll Need

Cotton fabric- in 1 or 2 styles

Batting (aka Wadding)

Thread to match your fabrics

Sewing machine

Fabric scissors, measuring tape, pins

Iron

Sewing Instructions
Step 1:

Cut 2 pieces of fabric, each 31 cm x 31 cm square. No need to add a seam allowance! There is a 1cm seam allowance included.

You can select whether to use 1 fabric for both the inner layer and outer layer, or 2 different fabrics. (I am sewing my Easter Basket with 2 different fabrics.)

If you are using 2 different fabrics, be sure to remember which one will be on the inside of your basket an which will be on the outside.

Step 2:

Cut out the batting, also 31 cm square. You can choose to use 1 or 2 layers of batting, but I have found 1 layer of a thicker batting is enough.

Step 2a (Optional):

If you have an iron-on batting, now is the time to iron it on! Be sure to put the bumpy “glue” side of the batting face down on the wrong side of the fabric you have chosen to be the inside layer (see Step 1) of your egg basket.

If you are not using the iron-on variety, you may choose to just tack the batting onto the wrong side of your inner layer of fabric instead.

Step 3:

Place your 2 fabric pieces wrong sides together (with the batting now facing outwards) and pin around all 4 sides.

You will need to leave a gap of about 6 cm to use for turning the basket right side out shortly 😉.

Step 4:

On your sewing machine using a 1 cm seam allowance, stitch the fabrics (with batting) together around all 4 sides. Be sure to leave that 6 cm gap open! You’ll need it in a moment!

Step 5:

Snip the seam allowance off from the 4 corners. Watch out! You don’t want to cut into the stitching 😉. This will make for neater corners when the basket is turned the right way out.

Step 6:

That gap you didn’t want to stitch closed is still there, right?!? Using this opening, gently pull the inside out through the gap so that you basket will now be facing right sides out.

Tip! Giving it an iron now will smooth out any last creases.

Step 7:

Pin the gap closed (you don’t need it anymore) and using your sewing machine, stitch around the entire border of your square using an approximately 3 mm seam allowance.

Step 8:

Mark the centre point of all 4 sides of the square on the outer fabric. (I have used a pin to mark the point on each side).

Now measure and mark 2 cm to both the left and right of each mid- point.

On each side of the square you should have 1 mid-point marker and 2 markings either side of it.

Step 9:

Now here’s where you have to really concentrate! 😉

Fold your square in half longways with the outer layer of your basket facing outwards, making sure the mid-point marks overlap.

Using one hand to hold the layers together, take one other mid-point mark and push it inwards so that you now have 3 mid-points of fabric touching in the centre. Repeat for the 4th mid-point marker. You should now have a triangle shape.

Step 10:

This step is where those extra markings are important! After that origami session, those 8 extra markings should now be overlapping each other to form 4 pairs. These markings show where you need to sew the basket together.

Using your sewing machine (go slow, as the fabric layers together are now quite bulky) sew from the top edge of the basket downwards approximately 3 cm.

Repeat for the other 3 overlapping markings.

Your basket will now be that same triangle shape, now held together by those 4 short sets of stitches.

Step 11:

Time for the finale!

Unfold your cute basket, so that the centre opens up and each of the 4 corners also has an opening.

Taking one corner at a time, fold outwards so that it looks like a beautiful blooming flower 😊.

Congratulations! You have now created your very own, Easter Basket! (And like I promised, it’ll also hold 5 deliciously warm, boiled eggs 😉.)
