Easy Sewing How-to: Answers to 10 Questions Every Sewing Beginner Asks

01. What basic tools do I need to start sewing?

The options can be endless, but… You don’t need a sewing room full of gadgets! The basics include a sewing machine, fabric scissors, thread, sewing needles, pins, a measuring tape, and an iron. A seam ripper (for those mistakes I guarantee you’ll make 😅) and fabric marking tools are also super handy.

For more details and a couple more basic tools you’re sure to make good use of, take a look at this list of Essential Sewing Tools.

02. How do I thread my sewing machine?

Threading a sewing machine involves placing the spool of thread on the spindle (usually on top of the sewing machine), guiding it through the tension discs, up to the take-up lever, and then threading the needle.

The process may vary by machine, so consult your manual for details. A lot of machines have handy numbered markings or arrows to help guide you through the process. If in doubt, YouTube tutorials can be a lifesaver! 😉

03. What is seam allowance and is it always included in a pattern?

A seam allowance is the space between the line of stitches created by your sewing machine and the fabric edge, giving room for seams. Many commercial patterns include it (usually e.g. 1/4” or 1cm), but some don’t so you’d need to add it on yourself.

Always carefully check the instructions before cutting! (You’ll thank me later!)

04. How can I control the speed of my sewing machine?

Sewing machines respond to how hard you press the foot pedal- light pressure means slow stitching, while firm pressure speeds it up. Think of it as like the gas pedal of your car.

If your machine has a speed control dial or slider, adjust it for even more precise control. Practicing on scrap fabric helps you find a comfortable pace.

Bonus Tip! If you can, try operating the foot pedal either barefoot or with socks on, rather than wearing shoes. It helps you to be more sensitive to the pressure you place on the foot pedal and therefore, the amount of “gas” you are giving the machine.

05. How do I sew straight?

The trick is to let the machine do most of the work! Don’t push or pull the fabric, just guide it gently. Use the seam guides on the machine’s needle plate to keep your stitching straight, and take it slow.

If you’re still struggling, painter’s tape or a magnetic seam guide can give you a visual edge to follow. And remember: practice makes perfect!

06. What is sewing machine tension and how do I adjust it?

Sewing machine tension controls how tightly or loosely the upper and lower threads are held together. The stitches should look evenly balanced on both side of the fabric. If your stitches look uneven or the threads are pulling too tight or too loose, your tension may need adjustment. One sign of the tension being “off” is if you notice loops of thread either on the top or bottom side of the seam.

Start by consulting your machine’s manual to see where the tension dial is located. For most sewing machines, the tension should be set between 4-5 for general sewing. Try adjusting the tension in small increments and testing on scrap fabric before proceeding with your project.

07. What is an overlocker and do I need it?

An overlocker (also called a serger) is a special sewing machine that trims fabric edges while stitching, creating a neat, professional finish. (Take a look inside your store-bought clothing to see what I mean!) It’s great for sewing stretchy fabrics and preventing fraying, but you definitely don’t need one to get started.

A standard sewing machine with a zigzag stitch can also finish fabric edges effectively. Some machines even have a faux-overlock stitch included. 😉

There’s a few differences between a serger and a regular sewing machine that are important to know. Have a read HERE.

08. How can I stop a seam from coming undone?

There are a number of reasons the stitching of a seam may not hold. Always check that you followed the seam allowance and that the stitches do not accidentally veer off the edge of the fabric. To prevent unravelling of a finished seam, always backstitch (sew a few stitches forward and backward) at the beginning and end of a seam. Alternatively, finishing raw edges with a zigzag stitch or pinking shears can help stop fraying.

09. How do I sew corners?

Sewing straight lines is one thing. But curves and corners?…

For a sharp corner, stop stitching just before the edge (pay attention to use the same distance as the project’s seam allowance), with the needle down. Lift the presser foot, pivot the fabric 90 degrees, lower the presser foot and then continue sewing.

Practice Sewing Sheets are a great way to practice your control of stitching all sorts of lines.

10. How often do I need to change the sewing machine needle and how do I change it?

There isn’t a hard and fast rule (although there are surely some sewing experts who might disagree). Change your needle after every few projects or when it starts skipping stitches or making a dull sound.

To change it, turn off your machine, loosen the screw holding the needle, remove the old one, insert a new needle (flat side facing the back), and tighten the screw securely.

Be sure to safely discard the old needle, no matter how “blunt” you think it is. It can still be very sharp for fingers, even if not for your fabulous fabric! 🙈
